Aug 23, 2015

Passage:Galatians 5:22-23

Preacher: Rick Blackwell

Detail:

Our Hope and Our Glory-Gentleness and Self Control

Celebrating the Presence of Christ in Us

Colossians 1:27 ESV

(27)  To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

Galatians 5:22-23 ESV

(22)  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

(23)  gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

  1. Gentleness - πρᾳότης praotēs prah-ot'-ace

From G4235; gentleness; by implication humility: - meekness.

Vines NT Words -Rather it is an inwrought grace of the soul; and the exercises of it are first and chiefly towards God. It is that temper of spirit in which we accept His dealings with us as good, and therefore without disputing or resisting; it is closely linked with the word tapeinophrosune [humility]

  1. Self-Control ἐγκράτεια egkrateia eng-krat'-i-ah

From G1468; self control (especially continence): - temperance.

Vines NT Words -

Occurs in Act_24:25; Gal_5:23; 2Pe_1:6 (twice), in all of which it is rendered "temperance"; the RV marg., "self-control" is the preferable rendering, as "temperance" is now limited to one form of self-control; the various powers bestowed by God upon man are capable of abuse; the right use demands the controlling power of the will under the operation of the Spirit of God; in Act_24:25 the word follows "righteousness," which represents God's claims, self-control being man's response thereto; in 2Pe_1:6, it follows "knowledge," suggesting that what is learned requires to be put into practice.
