So Great A Sacrifice

May 24, 2015

Passage:John 15:11-17

Preacher: Rick Blackwell

Detail:

So Great A Sacrifice

John 15:11-17 ESV

(11)  These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

(12)  "This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.

(13)  Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

(14)  You are my friends if you do what I command you.

(15)  No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.

(16)  You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.

(17)  These things I command you, so that you will love one another.

We must not forget the sacrifices made by so many on our behalf so that we may live in a free society.

We must not forget the sacrifice that Jesus made on our behalf so that we could be saved from the eternal curse of sin.

(13)  Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

Romans 5:7 ESV

(7)  For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die—

We must make sure that we are the friends of Jesus.

(14)  You are my friends if you do what I command you.

Matthew 7:21 ESV

(21)  "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

2 Peter 3:9 ESV

(9)  The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

Romans 10:1-13 ESV

(1)  Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved.

(2)  For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.

(3)  For, being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness.

(4)  For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

(5)  For Moses writes about the righteousness that is based on the law, that the person who does the commandments shall live by them.

(6)  But the righteousness based on faith says, "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will ascend into heaven?'" (that is, to bring Christ down)

(7)  "or 'Who will descend into the abyss?'" (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).

(8)  But what does it say? "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart" (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim);

(9)  because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

(10)  For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.

(11)  For the Scripture says, "Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame."

(12)  For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him.

(13)  For "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."
