Aug 16, 2015

Passage:Colossians 1:27

Detail:

Our Hope and Our Glory – Goodness and Faithfulness

Celebrating the Presence of Christ in Us

Colossians 1:27 ESV

(27)  To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

Galatians 5:22-23 ESV

(22)  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

(23)  gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

1. Goodness - ἀγαθωσύνη agathōsunē ag-ath-o-soo'-nay

From G18; goodness, that is, virtue or beneficence: - goodness. Definition: the quality of being good, in particular, virtue; moral excellence. Origin – Old English = Godness “like God”.

Mark 10:17-18 ESV

(17)  And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him and asked him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"

(18)  And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.

Lightfoot regards chrestotes as a kindly disposition towards others; agathosune as a  kindly activity on their behalf.

2. Faithfulness - πίστις pistis pis'-tis

From G3982; persuasion, that is, credence; moral conviction (of religious truth, or the truthfulness of God or a religious teacher), especially reliance upon Christ for salvation; abstractly constancy in such profession; by extension the system of religious (Gospel) truth itself: - assurance, belief, believe, faith, fidelity.

An unwavering commitment to truth and fidelity that flows from God Himself.

From Anglo-French and Old French feid, foi "faith, belief, trust, confidence; pledge" (11c.), from Latin fides "trust, faith, confidence, reliance, credence, belief."

Romans 10:17 ESV

(17)  So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

Galatians 3:2 ESV

(2)  Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith?
